Infrastructure

Who pays for the SMSC infrastructure, including roads and other services?

The SMSC pays for its own infrastructure. While the SMSC is not legally required to pay for improvements to the system of roads and highways that lead to its reservation, it has a history and practice of paying for road construction near and through the reservation. The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community utilizes its financial resources from gaming and non-gaming enterprises to pay for all of the internal infrastructure of the Tribe, including but not limited to roads; water and sewer systems; power lines; parks; water and wastewater treatment; storm water management; wellhead protection; zoning; building code enforcement; fire protection; ambulance service; police protection; and essential services in education, health, and welfare.
