Mdewakanton Public Safety

As a sovereign nation, the SMSC maintains a full-time, professional fire and ambulance department – Mdewakanton Public Safety (MPS). MPS not only serves the SMSC reservation, members and guests, but often works in coordination with neighboring governments, including the cities of Shakopee and Prior Lake.

MPS is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and responds to an average of 150-200 calls each month. Through mutual aid agreements with local governments, MPS provides fire and emergency service assistance upon request. Learn more at mdfire.org.

Protecting Lives

Mdewakanton Public Safety provides emergency response, emergency medical services, fire prevention, and fire response services. Our firefighters control and extinguish fires, handle hazardous materials incidents, conduct rescues, and respond to vehicular accidents – but their work doesn't end with on-the-ground operations. Education is just as important to saving lives as responding to life-threatening situations. MPS often offers free health screenings and CPR and first aid classes to the general public. Through the local Explorers program, MPS also devotes two hours each week teaching area youth from 14 to 17 years old the basics of fire service.

Grants and Donations

Seeking to support public safety throughout the state, the SMSC often distributes public safety grants to agencies in need. In 2015, the tribe granted more than $500,000 to 34 recipients across Minnesota.

In 2004, MPS developed the Mdewakanton LIFE program – a program which donates Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to organizations in need. Use of Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) is the most effective method to immediately treat sudden cardiac arrests, and organizations ranging from police departments to church congregations have received these life-saving devices. Since its inception, Mdewakanton LIFE has donated approximately 900 AEDs and saved 28 lives.

That's the number of lives that have been saved by Automatic External Defibrillators donated by the SMSC to schools, police and fire departments, and other organizations, since the Mdewakanton LIFE Program began in 2004.
