Since 2011, the tribe has been a leader in composting operations, offering education and guidance on the benefits and best practices of sustainable waste recycling. Rooted in the Dakota tradition of caring for the earth, the SMSC’s composting efforts have transformed organic waste into high-quality compost, soil amendments, and natural hardwood mulch.

With its grand opening in June 2025, Dakota Prairie Composting (DPC) became a major expansion of these efforts. With three times the capacity of the original SMSC Organics Recycling Facility, DPC is the largest commercial organics recycling facility in the Midwest. The new facility continues the tribe’s commitment to environmental stewardship while providing expanded access to premium composting products for both retail and wholesale customers.
