Supporting Native American Families

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) connects Native American families residing in Scott County with a variety of educational and health services and programs. Families may qualify for reimbursement of educational expenses, financial aid for child care tuition, and direct health care services, including financial assistance for medical costs. Additionally, the SMSC’s Family and Children Services Department is dedicated to preserving family stability by offering tailored support, guidance, and advocacy to address the unique needs of each family member. Together, these initiatives demonstrate a strong commitment to enhancing the well-being of Native American communities in Scott County.

Johnson O’Malley Program

Funded by a Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) grant, this program is designed to reimburse educational expenses for qualified Native American students who are enrolled in a U.S. federally recognized tribe, reside in Scott County, and attend a Scott County public school.

Wounspe Program

Funded by the SMSC, this program is intended to reimburse educational expenses for Native American students who attend a Scott County public school, reside in Scott County, and do not meet the Johnson O’Malley Program qualifications due to enrollment or blood quantum requirements.

Contract Health and Direct Care Only Services

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community provides an opportunity for eligible Scott County Native Americans, and their dependents, to access and receive care at our onsite clinics through the Contract Health and Direct Care Only Services program. The process to determine eligibility for these services requires a completed application and supporting documentation to be provided. Once approved, the eligible applicants will have the ability to be seen at SMSC clinics.
