Prior Lake, Minn. – More than 25 million real Christmas trees are sold in the United States each year. For local residents wondering what to do with their trees once the holidays have passed, the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community (SMSC) has an answer. Residents of Prior Lake, Shakopee, Savage, and Scott County are invited to drop off their trees at no charge at the SMSC’s Organics Recycling Facility (ORF) from Thursday, December 26-Friday, January 17.

Hours for Christmas tree drop-off will be:

Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Saturday, January 4, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Saturday, January 11, 8 a.m.-4 p.m.
Closed on Sundays and on New Year’s Day.

The trees must be free of tinsel, flocking, and other non-compostable material. Garlands and spruce tops will be accepted as long as metal and other non-compostable items are a minor component. Wreaths will be accepted as long as the metal cages are removed prior to drop-off.

The Organics Recycling Facility is located at 1905 Canterbury Road in Shakopee.

About the ORF

The SMSC opened the ORF in 2011 to support its strong commitment to the environment and the global need to reduce the amount of organic waste going into landfills. The ORF uses the waste materials to produce nutrient-rich compost and other soil amendments, which the SMSC uses and makes available for purchase. For more information, visit www.smscorf.com.
